What is SEO, and where should a small business start?
SEO looks complicated, but the basis is simple: help Google understand your site, and help people find what they're looking for. Here's how to start from zero.

"I had SEO done on my site but nothing changed." I hear this a lot. The reason is usually a misunderstanding of what SEO is in the first place.
What SEO actually means
SEO is not about tricking search engines. It's about telling Google clearly what your site is about, and answering the questions people are genuinely asking. That's it.
It has three legs, and you need all three at once:
The technical side. Your site loading fast, displaying properly on a phone, having its page headings set up correctly, having a sitemap. Without these, Google can't read your site properly.
The content side. Are the answers to your customers' questions actually written on your site? Someone searching "web design prices" who can't find any pricing information on your site will simply go back.
The trust side. Do other sites mention you, do you have a business listing, do you have reviews.
Where to start
Go in order; don't try to do everything at once:
- Set up a Google Business Profile. If you're a local business this single step has the biggest effect, and it's free.
- Install Search Console. This is how you see your site through Google's eyes. It shows which terms people find you with.
- Give each page one topic. Don't explain your services, your history and your contact details all on one page.
- Write headings properly. Each page should have one main heading, and that heading should say what the page is about.
- Measure your speed. A slow site falls behind no matter what you write.
How long does it take?
The honest answer: months. For a new site the first meaningful movement usually takes three to six months. If someone promises you "number one in a month," they're either exaggerating or about to use methods that end badly.
In exchange, the position you earn lasts. Stop paying for ads and the visitors stop that day; your place in search results keeps working even when you're not.
The most common mistake
Cramming the keyword into the text thirty times. Google noticed this years ago and penalises it. Write naturally; think about who you're writing for, not which algorithm.
