Google Business Profile: the highest-return step for a local business
Free, set up in an hour, and the fastest way to appear in local searches. How to fill the profile in properly and keep it alive.

If you're a local business and you only do one thing online, make it a Google Business Profile. It's free, takes an hour to set up, and it's the only thing that gets you into "near me" searches.
Why it works so well
When someone searches "furniture shop near me" on their phone, Google shows a map and three businesses above the search results. Getting into those three boxes is worth more than ranking first organically — it's higher on the page and closer to the tap.
Setting it up properly
Choose the category carefully. The primary category is the single strongest setting for deciding which searches you appear in. "Furniture store" and "Furniture manufacturer" return different results.
Enter realistic opening hours. Mark holidays too. Appearing open while closed doesn't just lose the customer who shows up — it earns a bad review.
Write the address and phone exactly as they appear on your site. Google looks at consistency across sources. Even "St." versus "Street" weakens the signal.
Add photos. Exterior, interior, products, team. Businesses with photos on their profile get noticeably more clicks.
Keeping it alive
Setting up the profile and forgetting it is a common mistake. Google favours active profiles:
- Reply to reviews. All of them. A calm reply offering a solution is worth more than the negative review it answers.
- Post updates. A new product, a campaign, a seasonal change. Even a short note keeps the profile alive.
- Fill in the questions section. You can add and answer your own frequently asked questions.
Three common mistakes
- Using a fake address. Businesses without premises should be set up as service-area businesses. A wrong address gets the profile suspended.
- Creating more than one profile. Two profiles for the same business lower the ranking of both.
- Buying reviews. Google detects fake review patterns and the penalty is severe.
How it connects to your site
The profile and your site feed each other: the link on the profile brings traffic to the site, and the address and phone on the site confirm the profile. Setting both up together is far more effective than either alone.
